In this research work, a novel controlled drug delivery system was studied. The system is made up of water insoluble, biodegradable polymers; poly (D,L lactide) (PDLLA) and poly (D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA), dissolved in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP). Such a polymer solution forms gel depot upon injection into the body fluids and the depot itself gradually degrades with time. A highly potent drug, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) is incorporated into the depot to achieve the sustainable release profile.
