The leading cause of long-term disability has been identified as the attack due to stroke. About forty percent of stroke patients are left with moderate functional impairments and 15%-30% suffer from severe disability. Early and effective rehabilitation interventions initiated immediately after stroke can enhance the recovery process and minimize the functional disability. Improved functional outcomes for patients also contribute to patients' satisfaction and help reduce the potential costly long-term care expenditures.
