Human spinal intervertebral disc (IVD) is 23 in number in the spinal column that connect the adjacent vertebral bodies. The disc is a heterogenous organ consisting of nucleus pulposus (NP), annulus fibrosis and cartilaginous endplates. The nucleus pulposus is a fluid like viscous gel located in the middle of the disc. The annulus fibrosis is connected with the nucleus pulposus intimately and in the radial direction. A thin layer of hyaline cartilage (called as cartilaginous endplate) similar to articular cartilage serves as the interface between the bones of the vertebral body and each of the annulus fibrosis and nucleus pulposus of the disc.
