Pathological tremor is an involuntary rhythmic oscillation of a body part superimposed on voluntary, purposeful movement. Since it interferes with the functional movements, it is frustrating, embarrassing and frequently disabling. Medication is seldom successful in treating all such patients. Surgical treatment such as deep brain stimulation can be advantageous, but it is invasive and very expensive. There has been some research on treatment of tremors, by means of mechanically loading the affected limb. However, this was found to interfere with the voluntary movements along with the suppression of tremors.
