Description
Chinatown is a traditional locality rarely seen in rapidly modernized Singapore. The making of a place can be seen as an ongoing process enhanced by the setting, or the setting it attempts to project or being portrayed in history or being part of the collective memory. It involves social, cultural, economic and political factors to endow a venue with symbolic meaning, memory and significance. It could be built out of careful planning or be perceived as a way of living in daily life. Chinatown has experienced constant changes and redefinitions over time. This project is a study of Chinatown's development to explore its construction process and implications from the three aspects of “History”, “Heritage” and “Nostalgia”. A survey based on the residents and tourists in Chinatown is carried out to investigate the cognition and collective awareness of Chinatown. The residents reveal the nostalgia for old Chinatown and their local sentiment for the place. And in the eyes of the tourists, they see Chinatown as a symbolic place of the Chinese culture. The image of Chinatown reflects the effects of codification aimed at preserving or enhancing Chinatown and its traditions felt to be of value achieved by the government agencies.
