Summary: | This research explores the motivation of students in Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in undertaking International Student Exchange Programme (INSTEP), and the nature of exchange programmes as a form of alternative tourism. While there is substantial literature covering the social and cultural interaction between visiting and local students, little research has been done from the perspective of Sociology of Tourism, which focuses on the unique experience of the exchange students. In attempt to redress this gap, this study draws on participant observation in Office of Global Education and Mobility, in-depth interviews and focus group discussion with 12 NTU undergraduates who had returned from INSTEP.
