This dissertation is a study of the absence of national-type secondary schools from the history of Chinese education in Malaysia. Although both the national-type secondary schools and independent Chinese schools are a continuation of former Chinese schools in Malaysia, but all along research on Chinese education had been much focused on the latter. This study will further explore the reasons behind national-type secondary schools’ acceptance of restructuring, and why they could not gain understanding from the masses in Chinese society, which explains their exclusion from the history of Chinese education. This paper will also look into the efforts towards sustaining Chinese education and culture in national-type secondary schools, and that they should be given a place in the Chinese education history. The national-type secondary schools had not been acknowledged in Chinese education system for many years until a seminar held in Year 2010, where challenges and difficulties faced by these secondary schools started to surface and gain more attention. Newspapers reports have also been following up on the updates of the national-type secondary schools in the recent two years. This paper attempts to elaborate and reiterate the efforts and perseverance of national-type secondary schools towards Chinese education through the case studies of Keat Hwa High School and Chung Ling High School. It is undeniable that national-type secondary schools were excluded from the history of Chinese education, but with increasing concerns over their development in the recent years, they will no doubt be valued and given much importance, with the hope of being included in the Chinese education system in the near future.
