本文采用了新加坡９０年代的社会政治语境，采用美国学者希尔斯定义为知识分子的功能，来讨论政府推行“华文精英”下的 “华文知识分子”在华语剧场作为知识分子的运作以及发挥功能的场域。再来，采用继“特选学校”之后，“华文精英”的教育政策来讨论“华文精英”制度如何影响下一代的华语剧场工作者以及华语剧场未来的景观。
“Chinese-language Intellectual” is a unique term coined in Singapore. As Singapore progressed into the 70s, Singapore started to consider the problems that are associated with modernity; one of the concerns was that modernity brings about negative impacts of “westernization” on the society. While, Singapore carried out the Bilingual policy in school, it also started the “Chinese-elite” programme in the education system. All these policies brought about a new generation of “Chinese-language Intellectual” in Singapore.
When these bilingual and “Chinese-elite” students entered the Chinese-Language Theatre scene in the 1990s, it was then described as a new era for the Chinese- Language Theatre in Singapore. They discuss on contemporary social issues, rather than the cultural and historical issues previously associated with older generations of the “Chinese-language Intellectual”. |
