| description | Late marriage and the increasing trend of singlehood are two of the main factors attributed to low fertility in Singapore. Singapore is experiencing some form of marriage squeeze between the highly educated women and less educated men since most marriages are hypergamous. Increasingly, there are more women pursuing university qualifications; this may reduce the pool of potential spouses for these men.
My research focuses heavily on Singaporean Chinese single and unmarried men without university qualifications. I intend to find out more about their attitudes towards marriage even though they are not lowly educated. I would like to delve deeper into how they conceptualize marriage such as gender roles based on their educational levels and occupations. Also, I explored areas related to the Singapore context such as local and foreign women, government accredited and private dating agencies in order to provide a better understanding of the local marriage market. |
