| Summary: | In "Hijab", three strangers are forced to confront the various 'veils' that exist in their lives when they fortuitously meet at a funeral. While their coming together could be construed as a mere coincidence, each has a personal agenda that they want to accomplish by the end of the funeral. Using the rich imagery and metaphors of Islam and Sufism, “Hijab” aims to unveil the veils that exist in issues such as life and death, gender and sexuality and Otherness.
“Mining the ‘Local’ for the ‘Universal’” is a critical look at the playwright’s creative process in his attempt to create a piece that is situated steeply in local specificities but yet resonate universally. |
