description Hijab (veil) has long been a controversial issue ever since the 19th Century as reformers and liberals took to secularism and began to condemn the idea of women’s protective clothing. Aggravated by the rising sense of Islamophobia caused by September 11th, various connotations have tainted the hijab – thus, masking what it truly represents to the woman behind the veil. This study also aims to explore and understand the many discourses that surround the hijab, resulting in the proliferation of hijab debates today. Though the issue is not as widespread in Singapore as compared to its Western counterparts, this work aims to spark curiosity amongst those who are unaware. To address these factors, it is hoped that by creating a dialogue for the opposing views and having an agglomeration of passionate voices, it would bring about tolerance to those who understand the concept of freedom of choice.
