description | This study focuses on ethnicity as a sociological phenomenon and investigates the case of the Bajau in Sabah, East Malaysia. As a multi-ethnic country in Southeast Asia, Malaysia officially embraces the ideals of cultural diversity and shared nationality. With more than 30 ethnic groups, Sabah is relatively harmonious and united. My research investigates the positioning of ethnicity among the Bajau, which is the second largest ethnic community in Sabah. My fieldwork was conducted in the West Coast of Sabah, primarily in areas such as the capital city of Kota Kinabalu, the districts of Kota Belud, Tuaran and Kudat. I aim to illustrate how ethnicity continues to play a significant role in everyday lives. |
