Summary: | Liquid crystals (LCs), which was firstly discovered by Austrian botanical physiologist Friedrich Reinitzer in 1888, are substances with a phase of matter whose properties between those of a solid crystal and those of a conventional liquid. The property of responding to external electric field and optical anisotropy makes liquid crystals an excellent candidate of tunable diffractive optical elements. Liquid crystals based diffractive optical elements combine the advantage of liquid crystals and diffractive optical elements (DOEs), and also broad the application range of such diffractive optical elements. |
