Summary: | Real-time collaborative editing systems allow multiple geographically dispersed people to concurrently edit or design shared text/graphic/multimedia documents over the Internet. Main benefits of real-time collaborative document editing and design include more efficient use of human and financial resources, and improved productivity, quality, and competitiveness of data and knowledge workers. Prior research on real-time collaborative editing systems has been mainly conducted in the context of one-dimensional (ID) and two-dimensional (2D) systems, such as plain text editors, word processors, 2D graphics editors, etc. 1D/2D collaborative editing techniques are inadequate for supporting real-time collaborative three- dimensional (3D) design systems, which are radically different from and much more complex than collaborative 1D/2D editing systems. The goal of this research is to advance the state-of- the-art collaboration techniques for supporting real-time collaborative 3D design systems.
