description With the rapid development modern human civilization, our natural resources are being depleted at an alarming rate. There is a limit on how much our natural resources can be depleted and it is a fact that one day none will be left. In addition during the process of using energy, energy wastages in the forms of pollution like carbon emissions are produced. These pollutions in the long run will cause dire consequences both on humans and the Earth. Hence, it is essential for us to research in clean energy technology, for example electric vehicles that run on batteries instead of fuels. Having a good battery management system in an electric vehicle is very important so that they can operate longer and more effectively. This report introduces the basic idea of what is a Battery Management System (BMS) and the main function which includes how to implement a simple multi-cell battery management system using a C8051F340K microcontroller and the LTC6803 which is a battery monitoring IC. Each LTC6803 can measure up to 12 series connected battery cells. A high speed serial peripheral interface (SPI) is aids in the communication between the IC and microcontroller.
