Summary: | This project is to implement an alternative topology for a series-series grid connected
power system. The existing system uses traditional voltage-source inverters (VSIs) and these
inverters have a limited operating range. To overcome the limited operating range, these
inverters need to be connected with a separate dc-dc converter stage to enable them to operate in
both buck and boost modes. [6] This topology commonly known as two-stage inverters is used in
the existing system. An alternative topology for a series-connected photovoltaic system that is
able to overcome the various limitations of VSIs and provide single stage voltage boosting
capability is proposed with the use of Z-source inverters.
In this Final Year Project, the focus is on design of the proposed series connected solar
photovoltaic system using Z-source inverter (ZSI) topology. The focus of the project will be on
the simulation of the proposed system and it is will be on the design of the PV-circuit, MPPT
model, Z-source impedance network, PWM control strategy and filter design in the first part of
the report. Subsequently, the AC/DC control of the Z-source series connected PV system will be
implemented in the later part of the report. All of the simulations are conducted using
MATLAB/Simulink.
