description Synthetic aperture radar (SAR)is a form of radar whose antenna moves in relative to its detected regions. It can be used to form a synthetic aperture for high resolution imaging. And this application is widely used in large scale 3D mapping. In this project, radar target detection and imaging are studied in three approaches, namely, by theory, computer simulation, and experiment data. In particular, six measurement datasets are used. The room imaged is a typical computer lab that has been lined with radar absorbing material. Three different arrangements of the room’s contents are considered: empty scene, calibration scene, and populated scene. Two datasets were collected from each scene setting, among which one was retrieved behind the wall and another one was done without the wall. The 3D synthetic aperture signal processing algorithm is applied to get images. In addition, a possible new cross array concept of reducing the number of elements of planar array systems was investigated. Computer simulation shows that it is possible to use a cross array of M+N elements to achieve same angular resolution performance of an M×N rectangle planar array, with drastic cost saving and system simplification.
