description Analogue Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) systems have historically been deployed for security concerns. Internet Protocol (IP) CCTV cameras followed soon after, allowing CCTV footage to be viewed using a computer. With the advent of the mobile device age, current devices are capable of performing vast functions ranging from entertainment to communication purposes, packing the computational power required to perform audio and video media playback, Internet surfing and game playing. In this project, the focus is on bridging IP CCTV cameras and Android based mobile devices using a custom built Android application. Hardware implementation such as establishing a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), setting up of the respective IP CCTV cameras and the process of designing a mounting frame for a Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) capable camera are illustrated. Software implementation delves into the specifics of building of a customized Android application using Eclipse Indigo 3.7 and the Android Software Development Kit (SDK). Issues encountered during each phase with the corresponding formulated solutions are documented in a chronological and systematic order. The results obtained from the integration testing stage indicate that security installations implementing the use of IP CCTV cameras can readily introduce Android based devices to aid in remote viewing and controlling of the attached IP CCTV cameras via the custom built Android application.
