description The first part of this project was an introduction to the concept of the Real Time Locating System (RTLS) which was developed by SIMTech. The present RTLS active tags are operating on Texas Instruments (TI) CC2530 ZigBee chipset with in-built 8051 core firmware. The initial focus of this project is to improve on the impedance matching between the chipset and the antenna. A new concept of replacing the current 7 discrete components matching circuit with a single ceramic Balun circuit chip was introduced to reduce the size of the Printed Circuit Board (PCB) footprint and improving the spurious emission transmitted by the tags. The project progressed with the study of the feasibility of implementing and replacing the current chipset on the tag with Bluetooth technology protocol. The attention was drawn to the research and replacement of the current chipset with CC2540 Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) chipset. This new concept was actualized by student at a minimal cost by replacing the CC2530 to a CC2540 chipset on the current RTLS tags. With additional effort, the size of the Bluetooth tag was significantly reduced and improved which promotes user friendliness and increase compatibility for personnel and assets tagging. This project was concluded with the implementation of a personnel tracking concept onboard a naval ship via a student designed Graphical User’s Interface (GUI) which worked in combination with TI’s Bluetooth Device Monitor GUI.
