Description
Han Tan Juan (Pen Name: Zhang Han & Ma De etc.) concluded in his book “Lu Xun and Malaya Chinese Literature”, that Lu Xun the China writer has the greatest impact on Malaya Chinese Literature. This point can also be verified from the works of Miao Xiu, Wong Yoon Wah and Fang Xiu etc. In addition, Han Tan Juan also mentioned that the Malaya Chinese Society was also under the heavy influence of Lu Xun. Thus, there is a need for us to probe Lu Xun’s influences on other grounds. Lu Xun views literature as a tool to get his thoughts across to people. His works enlightened and inspired people, including Malaya Chinese who use it to strive for a better future. Only through thorough investigations, we are then able to fully determine the impact of Lu Xun on Malaya Chinese Society. After World War Two, South East Asia move towards gaining independence and breaking free from Colonial Rule. Malaya was no exception. However, it is difficult for the people to topple the mighty colonial government. To ensure that their goal can be fulfilled, the people required a symbol head to unify the masses and lead them against the Colonial Government. With a Chinese population that is almost half of the country’s population, Lu Xun was elected by the Chinese as the symbol head in Malaya. Han Tan Juan was actively involved in activities regarding the overthrowing of the Colonial Government and a loyal supporter of Lu Xun, thus his recount will be helpful towards this paper. By using an exclusive interview with Mr Han Tan Juan and references materials that were available, this paper will analyse the Malaya’s Society and Malaya Chinese Literature, thus coming to a conclusion regarding the impact of Lu Xun on Malaya Chinese Society from the post-World War Two era till the Cultural Revolution period.
