This dissertation attempts to illustrate China's international status in four parts: China's understanding on its international status, China's approaches to improve its international status, the opportunities and challenges to enhance China's international status and how the world sees on the changes of China's international status. In the first part, I briefly discuss the meaning of China's own views towards its international status. In the central sections, I outline what the Chinese government has done for the last thirty years to improve its international status; furthermore, I examine what the difficulties and risks will be in future when China wants to make more progress to enhance its international status. At the end, I will explore different countries' opinions on China's rise and conclude that "peace and cooperation" should be the "main objective" for China's own sake.
