For two decades starting from the 80's, the four 'Asian Tigers', South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore sustained the fastest economic growth rates in the world. In the 90's, 3 new stars, China, Thailand and Malaysia, have emerged, eager to take over the baton from the 'Tigers'. With the slow down of European economies and the two superpower economies: US and Japan, the world have turned their attention to the Asia Pacific region. Suddenly (it seemed), a string of 'forgotten' economies are propelled into the spotlight. These countries, linked by a single river, are known as the emerging Mekong economies. They are Vietnam (population 70 million), Mynanmar (43 million), Cambodia (25 million) and Laos (4 million)1, together with Northeastern Thailand and Yunnan Province in Southern China.
