With the recent upward revision of the capital adequacy requirements for the local banks, Singapore banks now joined the ranks of the most capitalized banks in the world. This is in spite of the fact that Singapore banks are already adhering to stricter capital requirements than their international counterparts. Are the recent changes a boon or bane to the local banks? How does the investing community react to such amendments? Will the new ruling, paradoxically, force the banks to adopt a riskier outlook, hence threatening the stability of the banking system? Will capital be too expensive a burden for the banks, thus affecting their returns? The existing financial literature provides no clear answer.
