In Asia, the NIEs have been the second tier of countries to undergo rapid industrialisation after Japan while ASEAN have emerged as the third wave in more recent years. Japan has since joined the ranks of affluent and slow-growing economies and the growth rates of the NIEs have been declining. The phenomenal growth rates of ASEAN in recent years have therefore led many to study its apparent gradual displacement of the NIEs. The extent of this displacement can be examined by studying their degree of export competition since all these countries follow the export-led path.
