This research was sparked off by Ministerial comments regarding Singaporeans' ignorance of their country's history. The importance of history cannot be underestimated. History serves as a guide for the future. As the great sixteenth century philosopher, Francis Bacon once remarked: "Histories make man wise". Our survey provides corroborative evidence that Singaporeans are generally not well-informed of their nation's history. The Group found that working adults displayed the least knowledge of Singapore's past which is in stark contrast to the level of knowledge shown by the senior citizens. On the whole, a general lack of knowledge exists in spite of the many efforts made to increase awareness of Singapore's history. Although the recommendations offered by the Group may allay the problem somewhat, the answer ultimately lies in the individual's desire to find out more about his own history.
