Description
Summary:Security systems have been present for more than a century. They can be divided broadly into intrusion detection and area surveillance. With the increasing need for security, many commercial security solutions are available in the market to cater to different needs. One such market is home security. However, with components being easily accessible, enthusiasts are able to design and implement their own home security system. Wireless communication is often used to interface the sensors to the main controller. One popular option is ZigBee. This project focuses on the effectiveness of a home security system built using readily available components and ZigBee. A home security system is designed and implemented using commonly available sensors and XBee modules. Two experiments, a detection test and battery duration test, are conducted to study the system’s effectiveness. The results proved that while such a system is effective for intrusion detection, it may not be feasible for daily use unless power consumption is thoroughly considered. Enabling low power mode is likely to improve the system’s effectiveness and feasibility for daily use.
