description | The cost to the environment and the concern over energy supply security motivate the active exploration of renewable energy sources. Also, it will be most desirable if electrical energy generated from these sources can be dispatched in a controllable manner. For example, excess harnessed energy could be stored at times of low load demand and then released back to the external system at times of high demand. The storage possibility at large-scale is the focus of this project.
In previous studies, a literature review of the various energy storage technologies has been carried out. The review focused on cost and the maturity of the technique, among other considerations.
This project is to continue to examine the use of hybrid energy storage system to cater for energy management, power quality and bridging power purposes. The hybrid system includes different types of energy storage medium e.g. pumped hydro, battery and supercapacitor. However, the coordination of the power flows among the different storage mediums remain a challenging problem. For example, determination of the capacities of the various storage mediums required to achieve given dispatch performance remains an open question. This project is to examine some aspect of the challenge. |
