Summary: | Mega containerships had been making headlines due to their massive sizes and the potential cost savings they could bring to carriers. There had been a recent trend of vessels more than 14,000TEU filling order books. In fact, the largest containerships delivered so far are Maersk’s 18,000TEU Triple-E class vessels, and CSCL has 19,000TEU vessels in the orderbooks with the first due for delivery in November 2014. While mega containerships promised economies of scale and cost savings, these benefits could be impacted by the lacklustre state of the container shipping market as well as other factors which will be further analysed in this report.
