description | Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technology is the favored method for
high speed access networks. Such a system employs a number of optical transmitting
channels separated by a small step in wavelength. One factor inhibiting the market
penetration for consumer applications like broad-band and passive optical networks is the
cost of the optical module. Thus, cost reduction without performance trade-off in the
perfomance has become a challenge for the optoelectronic component manufacturers.
The major part of the cost is from packaging due to the manual processing. Efforts are
ongoing to automate the assembly process and increase the integration within the module
to reduce cost. |
