description | Dispersion of C/SH microparticles between the interlaminar interfaces of glass/epoxy, carbon/epoxy and glass/phenolic laminates was successfully achieved and its effect on the laminate’s impact behaviour was investigated. A significant improvement in the energy absorption capability, the impact load bearing capacity, the deflection characteristics of the C/SH modified laminates was observed. Deformation of the particles and tearing of their outer shells, along with their nano-size rubber cores impeded the crack propagation. Study of selective particle dispersion and the effect of particle weight fraction were also conducted.
Laminate’s flexural performance, before and after impact, was evaluated. An empirically derived particle influence factor indicated an optimum performance with 30 g/m2 particle distribution. Improvement in the impact performance of the C/SH modified scarf joints and their possible application in repair design are discussed. In summary, influence of C/SH particles in improving impact resistance of laminated composites was successfully examined in depth, validated, and explained. |
