description | Singaporeans are spending more on leisure travel and there appears to be a greater necessity to travel. In light of the greater significance in travelling, this study draws the links between leisure travel and social status. Qualitative research in the form of in-depth interviews was done with 13 respondents of varied economic backgrounds, mostly through face-to-face interviews and a few through email interviews. Findings suggest that economic capital plays a large part in having social status. Other factors that influence social status are the discourses of travel and the ability to gaze into the lives of others while one’s is hidden from the tourists. |
