| Summary: | From the very start, I had known I would attempt to write Singapore. It is the trap that most Singaporean creative writers fall into – when we regard ourselves as writers, we see a Singaporean whose experience has yet been written. When we regard Singaporean literature, we see a landscape that has yet been properly cultivated and populated. We then assume that we can write that landscape. We are mistaken; one cannot succeed where success has not yet been defined. There is no Singapore canon for its writers to reference or draw from. And yet, we persist in our suffering. Worse still, I wanted to write for the mentally ill. |
