| Summary: | This study reviews the labour productivity measurement practices of some
manufacturing companies in Singapore. Specifically, it addresses the relevance and
perceived benefits of labour productivity, as well as the different types of labour
productivity measures, and their uses and shortcomings.
With the manufacturing environment in Singapore moving towards a higher
level of automation, it appears questionable as to whether labour productivity is still of
continued relevance. However, research has revealed that even for a capital-intensive
manufacturing environment, labour comprising of workers, supervisors, etc. still play an
integral role in the control of the whole manufacturing process.
Labour productivity measures can be complex and costly to implement,
especially in our dynamic manufacturing environment. Therefore, more studies and
research on labour productivity should be undertaken in the Singapore context, so as to
bring forth innovations in labour productivity measures which are vital to an
organisation's growth and viability in our modem and competitive business world .
