Summary:The ultra-wideband (UWB) technique is a promising technology in the current wireless communication because it can be differentiated from other conventional narrowband wireless technologies with the excess bandwidth (>500 MHz). One type of UWB signal is impulse radio UWB (IR-UWB), which has the advantages of high data rates and low power by transmitting very short duration pulses [1]. However, there are several R&D challenges investigating the performance and developing IR-UWB systems, including the tremendous time needed for conducting real-time experiments and high cost involved with system development. To solve this problem, the Advanced Design System (ADS), which is an advanced software from Agilent Technologies used for a wide variety of designs and simulations, can play a significant role in simulating the performance of indoor IR-UWB systems. In this project, IR-UWB systems are constructed in ADS, and the measurements ofthe real-time device are performed to characterise the simulations. These simulation models are then incorporated into the ADS simulation environment through custom made toolkits. This project contributes to the design of the ADS custom toolkits for IR-UWB systems. The toolkits include pulse generator, transmitter antenna, receiver antenna and IR-UWB receiver which are designed and fabricated by previous year students. The kits can be distributed and modified for users to explore the performance of different IR-UWB system architectures.
