He has contributed enormously to the development of Chinese Literature in Singapore back in his era. There were not many researches done on Yaozi’s novels, and the existing researches were mainly focused on his accomplishments as a sophisticated of female portrayals in his novels. Therefore, this paper would like to approach his novels from another angle, in hopes that it will create more discussions of his works. This paper will focus mainly on the gender aspects of the novels, from how the gender relationship is being established in the novels, to how it sets in and relate in the Nationhood and Class themes. This paper would be divided in to three parts. Chapter 2 discusses how the female image is being replicated in his novels with the application of themale gaze theory and how it becomes an essential factor in the construction of Masculinity in the male characters. Chapter 3 explores the relation between Nationhood and Gender, how the Nation is being reimagined under the context of Gender and how it contributes to the construction of National Identity. Last but not least, Chapter 4 looks into how the existing gender roles are being challenged by Class and how moral values are infused to maintain the status quo.
