| description | This exploratory study investigates the relationship between architecture which is iconic in the sense that it is a symbol of national pride, and the national identity of Singaporeans. This is done through exploring the connections individuals have with the iconic buildings and sites in the context of Singapore. The site of Marina Bay was chosen for this study, as its buildings have been earmarked by the state to serve as a prominent visual reminder to Singaporeans of the state’s political and economic legacy. This thus constructs the entirety of Marina Bay as an iconic site which captures the essence of Singapore’s source of national pride. Firstly, government discourses surrounding Marina Bay are examined to identify the role the state has in mind for that urban landscape and its accompanying buildings. Next, participant observation is done to gather a set of self-written narrative accounts of buildings where inferences about the iconic site can be made from. Lastly, semi-structured interviews are conducted to gather perceptual data which reveals experiences and influences that change people’s perceptions of Marina Bay. |
