| Summary: | This thesis delves deeper into the religious misappropriation of Hinduism within Meera Syal's books. Syal points an accusing finger at religion as an oppressive form of moral, sexual and totalising governance against women, particularly Indian women. However, Syal’s portrayal of religious images and ideas is overly simplistic, narrow and thus, dismissive of the multidimensional and rich background from which it stems. Therefore, this thesis aims to analyse the incongruence between the actual teachings of Hinduism, and Syal's Western interpretation of Indian religions and culture, and thereby explore its effect on Indian women.
