Summary: | (This thesis is separated into 4 sections). Singapore is a multiracial and multilingual city-state. Ever since Singapore became an independent state in 1965, the government of Singapore has implemented the “Four Official Languages Policy” and the “Bilingual Education Policy” , and has further launched the “Speak Mandarin Campaign” . These language policies and in particular, the Speak Mandarin Campaign, have drastically changed the linguistic environment of the Singapore Chinese Community. A major development involving a rapid shift in the main languages used by Singapore Chinese households has emerged: the usage of Mandarin and English has expanded rapidly while the usage of Chinese dialects is dropping sharply. |
