Standard tensile static test of metals

This final year project report is about the study of the tensile testing of Aluminium AL6061-T6511 which is then compared with AL6061-T6 which were done by past year students. The difference between the two is that T6511 undergoes a 1% to 3% stretching to get rid of some of the residual stress after...

description This final year project report is about the study of the tensile testing of Aluminium AL6061-T6511 which is then compared with AL6061-T6 which were done by past year students. The difference between the two is that T6511 undergoes a 1% to 3% stretching to get rid of some of the residual stress after extrusion and lastly straightened to meet the straightness tolerances. Other than that, the chemical compositions and mechanical properties are said to be the same. To find out whether the mechanical properties remain the same, static tensile test and strain gauge for AL6061-T6511 would be done and compared with past reports for AL6061-T6. Thus, this report could be used for future references for the tensile and mechanical properties of AL6061-T6 and T6511. Comparison will also be done with dynamic testing under Hopkinson bar test done by previous student. To carry out the static tensile test of AL6061-T6511, INSTRON 5500R machine is being used and ASTM international standard will be used as a guide to carry out this experiment. This would in turn get the mechanical properties for analysis and in addition the strain gauge values during the tensile tests. The purpose of this project is to illustrate the importance of following a proper international standard like ASTM as the properties of the materials differ when the speed of testing changes. Thus, this shows the importance of a test standard which is used internationally as a gauge. The experiment will focus on the testing with a feed rate of 0.5mm/min, 1.0mm/min and 1.5mm/min. The results are then compared to past year students report and also past test results attained by other people out in the industry. Lastly, virtual testing will be done on Solid Works to visualize the stress form on the specimen when tensile testing is done. This could then improve the discussion further in the recommendations and conclusion part.
