In this paper, we will be focusing on Malaysian Mandarin which is a regional variant of Standard Mandarin. To support this hypothesis, the paper will take on a corpus-based approach. The focus point will be analysing the function of a Chinese term zheyang used in everyday conversation by Malaysian Chinese. It has shown that zheyang is used as a sentencefinal particle in Malaysian Chinese whereas in Standard Mandarin it is placed as a sentence starter in a conversation. With the difference in sentence structuring in mind, it bounds to result in a change in the function use of zheyang. |
