Teaching efficacy of pre-service physical education teachers for teaching gymnastics in Singapore primary schools

description | The aim of this research was to examine pre-service teachers' teaching efficacy in teaching gymnastics in Singapore primary schools. A questionnaire was given to 21 pre-service PE teachers who have completed the Curriculum Gymnastics course in NIE. A 21-item teaching efficacy scale was used to obtain the teaching efficacy scores. These 21 items are obtained from the MOE PE syllabus for gymnastics. Each item can be rated across a 10-point Likert- type scale. Using SPSS, data collected were analysed through comparing the mean scores and carrying out Independent Samples T-test. The means of teaching efficacy scores were the highest for teaching students how to travel (M = 9.10, SD = 1.00), jump (M = 8.71, SD = 0.90) and climb (M = 8.47, SD = 1.69), and lowest for teaching students how to perform cartwheel (M = 7.10, SD = 2.02), headstand (M = 6.00, SD = 2.00) and handstand (M = 5.34, SD = 2.28). Results from the independent T-test also show significant difference in the total teaching efficacy scores for PTs with prior experiences in gymnastics (M = 180.00, SD = 11.09) as compared to that for PTs without prior experiences in gymnastics (M=145.86, SD=11.71); t(12) = 5.60, p = 0.001. The current study has shown areas which PTs lack confidence in teaching in, even after attending the Curriculum Gymnastics course, and how having prior gymnastics-related experiences could significantly boost teaching efficacy in gymnastics. |
