description This academic study covers the investigation of the effects of micro-crack patterns on mechanical properties of free surfaces of solids; micro-mechanics is essentially the study of detailed structures, converting from micro to macro structures. This conversion is a concept known as the ‘averaging procedure’. Micro-patterns refer to the various miniature surface defects; which will be applied to free surfaces of selected materials in order to further analyse how the surface elastic properties differ. The micro-cracks in this study involve single and angled cracks. Finite element method will be adopted to evaluate the plain strain, ε, tensile stress, σ and Young’s modulus, E involved due to the various cracks integrated with the Young’s Modulus relationship, E = σ / ε. Calculations are focused solely on 2-Dimensional parameters. A parametric study on the effect of cracks will be carried out by using the finite element method via Mechanical ANSYS Parametric Design Language (APDL) 16.1, a commercial computer-aided engineering software as the predominant calculation and analysis tool.
