description The usefulness of mobile devices has increased greatly in recent years, improving the productivity since almost everything humans once require in a physical form can now be accessed in a digital form. Everybody owns a smartphone now and does everything using their smartphone. Mobile applications are very common amongst us today. These applications all have different purposes but all have the common goal in improving the lives of people. In recent years, the rate of obesity around the world has increased steadily and this increased rate of obesity increases the probability of one having health problems such as diabetes or coronary heart attacks. A way to tackle this issue is by having a diet assistant to assist users in their dieting habits so that they can constantly be aware of what they are putting inside their body. With a diet assistant, the users can be more aware of their health and start taking charge in eating and exercising well to enjoy a healthy life. This paper describes the development of a dieting assistant application on the Android mobile platform primarily using the Android Studio integrated development environment and aims at contributing to tackling obesity primarily for Singapore, so as to improve the public’s awareness of balanced diets. The application also assists users in keeping track of important statistics such as their weight for the calculation of the basal metabolic rate and their body mass index as well as the daily permissible amount of calories they should intake to prevent them from gaining weight thus tackling the problem of obesity. The application is implemented successfully on the Android platform where the main functions of the Diet Assistant have been developed.
