description | Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) are vehicles that are able to navigate by sensing the environment without any requirement for human input. AVs have made tremendous technological advancements in the recent decades, and many visionary technological leaders have touted Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) as the transport mode of the future. Singapore’s unique transport landscape, especially with the high cost of personal cars, makes taxis much more desired and viable as form of daily transport. LTA hopes that implementing AVs in the future will reduce the number of vehicles on the road, and achieve the vision of a car-lite Singapore. AVs can help to fill in the gaps in public transport service, such as low-serviced areas and last-mile legs. Based on current estimates, AVs are also financially plausible as a taxi service, and improvements in technology will continue to decrease AV costs. Public perception is generally positive towards AVs, but there is still widespread concern and doubt over the safety of AVs. The main challenge will be to help those whose livelihoods are affected by AVs, and upgrade their skills to keep up with the inevitable flow of technology. |
