Summary:Virtual Reality (VR) has drawn much attention in the last few years due to extensive media coverage and mass production of VR devices. Education is one of the most promising fields where VR can be applied and add values. Fast expansion of aviation industry and technology innovation in aircrafts not only increase demand for maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services, but also make MRO more challenging and costly. Among the MRO requests, engine MRO accounts for nearly half of the amount. The aim of this project is to propose a method to apply VR in the education for engineering students and in the training for aircraft technicians, by disassembling a virtual turbofan engine in natural manner like the way the disassembly work is done in the real work place. The proposed method is implemented with Oculus Rift, Unity 3D 5.5.1 and Leap Motion Orion beta 3.2.0. The user is allowed to view the exploded view of the virtual turbofan engine, disassemble the engine components in sequence, and review the knowledge with self-test quiz. Visual and auditory aids are also implemented to enhance the interactivity and immersion experience.
