description This project is arm to investigate the changing in mechanical properties of free surface of solid with micro-crack patterns. Micro-crack patterns represent the miniature defects on the material surface, which will cause the changing in mechanical properties of the surface layer of material. The surface layer with Micro-crack patterns can be replaced by another layer of material with different mechanical properties which refers to macro structure. This conversion is a concept known as the ‘averaging procedure’. In order to characterize the mechanical properties for micro and macro structure, the Finite element method is adopted to evaluate the total strain energy of material under a constant load for both micro and macro structure. The simulation on the effect of cracks will be carried out by using the finite element method via Mechanical ANSYS Parametric Design Language (APDL). Modelling and causation during the simulation are focused on the 2-Dimensional parameters.
