It is a story based on historical facts and a folk story, where Mi Fu was struck by an imposing rock, following which he bowed deeply to the stone, addressing it as "Elder Brother Rock". As the theme of this painting has been constantly circulated and recreated, its rich cultural and spiritual content is continued. This paper aims to study the intertextuality of the Mi Fu bowing to a stone image and the literature on the paintings, by using text-image theories as its methodology. This dissertation begins with the China’s stone culture and the life and times of Mi Fu to find out the reasons of Mi Fu bowing to a stone. The second part will interpret the pictorial messages of Mi Fu bowing to a stone image and analyze its symbolic significance. The last part will focus on the analysis of inscribed poems on the paintings as well as study the motives behind the painter’s creation and the themes of the poems. Mi Fu bowing to a stone image and the literature on the paintings not only reflect the spiritual connotation of Mi Fu, but also got the metaphor of the emotion between brothers. Besides that, the image of the stone holds a cultural meaning of longevity and religion. |
