description The first time we visited the Sunday toys flea market, one of our interviewees, a vendor, told us quite out-of-the-blue: “Every toy will find a home.” It stuck with us for a long time. Singapore might be a pragmatic society, but there are many who are passionate about what they do, even if it does not fit society’s prescribed mould. For these local toy collectors, their toys mean the world to them, but the rest of society think otherwise. These collectors just have one goal: to convince others that collecting toys is more than a frivolous hobby, and to find their toys both a physical and emotional place in Singapore. A Toy Story is a final-year project on the local toy community. It charts the journey of these collectors and explores the following areas: the meaning they see in their toys, how they overcome resistance, and how they strive to build a future where both imagination and reality can co-exist.
