Description
Summary:The objective of this dissertation project is to conduct a study of the phenomenon of Open Source software and its adoption in the business environment in Singapore. Until recently, Open Source software was seen to be just a hobbyist's interest. In recent years however, the concept and popularity of Open Source software has surged tremendously. Proponents of Open Source software are viewing it as the way to go in terms of software development and adoption. The low cost of deploying and maintaining the software and the high quality of the software makes it increasingly attractive to corporations worldwide to adopt it. E xamples of Open Source software are the Linux operating system, the Perl language and the Apache Web Server. In particular, this study will use Linux as an example of Open Source software. This is because of the maturity of the product and the tremendous industrial interest in Linux in recent years as an operating system alternative to the Windows family of software.
