| Summary: | My project is named TIME-LESS, where by definition it means lasting; enduring. The term is apt as I wish to preserve this beautiful culture regardless of the passages of time. TIME-LESS consists of two collaterals – an editorial composing of my literature review and project concept, 3 illustrated fabric prints that portray the essence of the stories that I have collected from people of Peranakan heritage today, as well as motion graphics (of the aforementioned illustrations). Before I proceed, I would also like to highlight that although the Peranakan culture is extensive in Southeast Asia, I will only be focusing on Singapore’s perspective of it due to the given time-frame of the project as well as my own limited resources. The term ‘multiculturalism’ constitute to the majority of my research findings as the Peranakan society thrived during the age of colonialism due to this fundamental idea. The research covers the historical background, notable Peranakan figures such as the late Lee Kuan Yew, as well as traditional art forms that encompass the notion of hybridity. In addition, it draws the link between the Peranakan society and modern Singapore – how the former can be seen as a microcosm of the latter. Due to these similarities, be it positive or negative, I believe the culture can become a framework to understand the past and future for the betterment of the nation of Singapore.
